Affordable Justiceshortlisted for second charity award in as many weeks - this time it's the UK Charity Governance Awards 2023
Hull-based charity Affordable Justice has been shortlisted for the UK-wide Charity Governance Awards 2023, it has been announced. This is the second award the organisation has been shortlisted for this spring - the first being the Charity Awards 2023. Affordable Justice is in the running for the ‘Improving Impact in Small Charities' award which comes with a £5,000 unrestricted grant. It is one of 15 charities from across the UK that has already secured £1,000 in unrestricted grant funding for making it onto the shortlist.
Affordable Justice, which provides affordable family law services for women, many of whom have experienced domestic abuse, joins other nominated charities engaged in a diverse range of activities including mental health research, horticultural therapy, education and mentoring for disadvantaged young people, and employment support for refugees. The winners will be announced on 8 June at a live ceremony in London.
"We are so delighted to be shortlisted for a national award a second time in as many weeks," said Affordable Justice director Lisa Hilder. "Over the last few years we have helped more than 1100 women to achieve the legal outcome they were after, saving them over £1.4 million in legal fees. The overwhelming need for our services is driving us to scale our unique operational structure up on a national level. Such recognition helps us to raise awareness of our work and reach more women who may need our services".
A place on the shortlist has also secured the charity a paid one-year membership to the Association of Chairs for their board, and a complementary training place on a Cause4 Trustee Leadership Programme for new members of their boards.
Deepak Nambisan, who chairs the Awards for the organisers The Clothworkers' Company, said, "What is of particular note this year is that, aside from the two award categories specifically for the sector's smallest charities, over half of nominees across all categories are small charities employing fewer than 30 people. This shows that even when funds and other resources are limited, if there is ingenuity, foresight and commitment among the people - from the trustees to those ‘on the ground' - then any charity can achieve remarkable things.
"Congratulations to all our shortlisted charities - yet again, the high quality of entries provided plenty of debate around the judging tables, but also plenty of inspiration for the whole sector."
For the Charity Governance Awards, The Clothworkers' Company - a City of London livery company that supports trusteeship initiatives - is partnered with not-for-profit consultancy NPC (New Philanthropy Capital), third sector recruitment specialists Prospectus, and the trustee-matching charity Reach Volunteering.

Affordable Justice was set up specifically to help women who are not eligible for legal aid and who are not in a position to afford commercial law firm rates. The normal cost of commercial solicitors can be prohibitive for many women, keeping them trapped in unhappy and abusive relationships. For women worrying about the cost of obtaining legal advice about such issues, Affordable Justice offers a service charged at less than a third of typical high street rates.
