Hubs and libraries across Cardiff are preparing to launch this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, inviting children to step into the magical world of nature and storytelling with the 2025 theme: Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors.
Produced by The Reading Agency, the ‘Summer Reading Challenge 2025: Story Garden’ begins on July 5 and is part of a summer full of free, family-friendly activities in Cardiff’s libraries and hubs. Children will be encouraged to explore new books and stories while taking part in creative, nature-inspired events throughout the holidays, as they explore the link between reading and the great outdoors, where nature and imagination come together.
Aimed at children aged four to 11, the Challenge offers a fun and supportive way to keep young minds active over the summer. From outdoor-themed crafts and storytelling sessions to nature trails and imaginative play, there’s something for every young reader to enjoy. Children can track their reading progress and earn rewards along the way, including stickers, ladybird poppers, and windmills.
This year’s Challenge features
enchanting illustrations by award-winning artist Dapo Adeola, bringing the
Story Garden to life with magical creatures, plants, and flowers to spark
children’s imaginations.
A
council spokesperson said:"The Summer Reading
Challenge is a fantastic initiative that keeps children motivated, curious, and
learning throughout the summer holidays. By encouraging regular reading, it
helps prevent the 'summer dip'—a common decline in reading ability during the
break from school.
“The
challenge not only supports literacy and language development but also boosts
children's confidence, imagination, and love for stories. Best of all, it
offers families a free and enjoyable way to explore books together, get
creative, and even connect with nature through themed activities and
events."
Children who sign up will
receive a starter pack and collect prizes for each book they read. Everyone who
completes the Challenge will be awarded a medal, certificate and colourful
windmill to celebrate their achievement.
The Challenge is free to join and open to all. Just visit your local library or hub from July 5, or sign up online at: https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk
