A new guide has been launched to help parents feel more confident when their child is unwell and know where to go for the right help at the right time.
A Family
Guide to Keeping Your Child Healthy and Common Childhood Illnesses is a free,
easy-to-use booklet packed with simple, practical advice. It is available in 10
community languages to help as many families as possible access trusted health
advice in a language they understand.
The booklet
explains how common childhood illnesses such as coughs, colds, fevers and
rashes can be managed at home and when parents should seek advice from a
community pharmacy, GP, NHS 111 Wales or the Emergency Unit.
It also
covers important topics including safe sleeping, emotional wellbeing and
challenging behaviour and useful information about local services that can
offer support.
The guide
has been developed by the Cardiff and Vale Health Inclusion Service (CAVHIS),
in partnership with a number of services and partner organisations including
the Local Public Health Team, Cardiff Council and Cardiff University.
Dr Ayla
Cosh, Clinical Director for Cardiff and Vale Health Inclusion Service (CAVHIS)
said: “This booklet is a helpful resource for families offering clear,
practical advice that can help parents and carers feel confident and prepared,
even before their child becomes unwell.
“It's
available online in multiple languages, and printable versions are also given
to people newly arrived in Cardiff who are registered with CAVHIS. We hope that
this booklet makes it easier for families to access trusted guidance in a
format and language that is more accessible with relevant local information.”
Cardiff
Council Cabinet Member for Public Health and Equality, Cllr Julie Sangani,
said: “We’re proud to support this important initiative that empowers families
with accessible, trusted health advice.
“By making
this guide available in multiple languages, we’re helping to ensure that
parents across the city can feel confident in caring for their child’s health.
This is a great example of how partnership working can make a real difference
in our communities."
Cllr Ash
Lister, Cardiff Council Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “We want
to make sure the advice we offer is clear and accessible, so parents and carers
can make informed choices and so every child has the best start in life.
“This new
guide is not just a health resource - it’s a tool to build confidence and
resilience in our communities so we can achieve this.”
The digital
booklet is available on both the CAVHIS website and the Cardiff Families
website. Schools and third sector organisations are also being encouraged to
host and promote the guide to help share it widely.
The
resource is available in: English, Welsh, Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Dari,
Farsi, Kurdish, Pashto and Tigrinya.
