Storm Darragh: Cardiff Moves into Clean-Up Stage
 08/12/24

As Cardiff transitions into the clean-up stage following Storm Darragh, efforts are underway to address the aftermath of the severe weather.

Cardiff Council’s Emergency Management Team reported no further calls overnight, with only one incident involving a fallen tree on Maes-Y-Coed Road in Heath.

Today's weather forecast is more favourable, with significantly lower wind speeds and light rain expected. However, a yellow weather warning for wind remains in effect until 6pm this evening.

Fallen Trees Approximately 150 trees have fallen during the storm. Of these, 100 have been made safe, while the remaining 50 trees, which fell in parkland and pose no danger to the public, will be addressed at a later date. Tree surgeons will continue their work this morning to clear the trees made safe across the city yesterday.

Road Closures Two road closures remain in place this morning:

  • Several trees have fallen on the slip road off Leckwith roundabout, leading to the A4232 towards Culverhouse Cross. These trees will be removed, and the slip road is expected to reopen by 12 noon today.
  • Heol Goch in Pentyrch remains closed until debris is removed and a visual inspection is completed.

Members of the public should continue to report any further issues via Connect to Cardiff’s emergency line by calling 029 2087 2087.

Essential Services Our focus remains on essential services, including Social Services, Housing (including homelessness provision), Meals on Wheels, Telecare, Highways, and Harbour Authority, as we move into the recovery stage of the storm.

River Levels It has been confirmed that the River Taff flood alert has now been removed, and the flood alerts for the Ely River and the Rhymney River were removed last night.

Today's Arrangements:

  • Recycling Centres: Closed.
  • Cardiff Riding School: Several lessons have been cancelled, and the school will be open only for a limited number of riders. All affected individuals have been contacted directly.
  • Cardiff International White Water High Ropes: Closed today, but the rest of the facility is open.
  • Cardiff Dogs Home: Open today.
  • Bute Park Light Trail, Working Street Christmas attractions, and Cardiff Castle: Open today.
  • Cemeteries: Open as usual from 10am today.
  • Winter Wonderland (Castle and City Hall sites): Open from 1pm today.

Work will continue this morning to ensure that all remaining trees that fell on the highway or posed a danger to the public are cleared, and the remaining road closures are lifted.
