The right ingredients to celebrate Children of Foster Carers Month
29/10/24
Flour was flying, dough was spinning, pomodoro sauce was dolloped and there was a generous topping of smiles and laughter at a special event to celebrate the children of fosters carers in Cardiff last week.
It was the recipe for a successful night as Foster Wales Cardiff brought together children from the city’s fostering families for a fun-filled night of pizza-making to mark Children of Foster Carers Month.
Each October, the annual campaign is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the vital contribution the children of foster carers make to foster care.
Fourteen children and young people from the Foster Wales Cardiff family enjoyed an evening together where they had the chance to shares their experiences with each other, discuss the support they receive and of course, enjoy the delicious pizzas they made at Giovanni’s in the Bay Italian restaurant in Cardiff Bay.
Cabinet Member for Children Services, Cllr Ash Lister, said: “Being part of a foster family is an experience that shapes not just the lives of the children who are in care but also the children in the fostering families themselves.
“This Children of Foster Carers Month get-together was an opportunity for us to show our appreciation for our foster carers’ children in a fun way and also give them the chance to have their views listened to, and understand if there is anything more we can do to support them.”
Speaking about his experience of being part of a fostering family, Rory, 12, said: “I like being in a fostering family. It’s quite silent with just me and my mum in the house so good to have company around the house and I get a good feeling when you do something good to help others.”
Eleven-year-old Helen said: “You can welcome a child by getting them toys to play with when they arrive, being friendly, helping to show them their bedroom and around the house and sharing your parents with them.”
Foster Wales Cardiff is part of the national network of Wales’ not-for-profit Local Authority fostering services that works to build better futures for local children. The service provides expert training, dedicated support, and financial resources for foster carers across the city.
