‘Marvellous Makers’ Summer Reading Challenge starts in Cardiff this July

26/6/24

Hubs and libraries across Cardiff are getting ready to launch this year's Summer Reading Challenge and aiming to ignite children's creativity and storytelling abilities through the magic of reading throughout the summer holidays.

Presented by The Reading Agency, the ‘Summer Reading Challenge 2024: Marvellous Makers' gets underway on July 6 and is part of a fun-packed summer of activities and events in Cardiff libraries and hubs. Young readers will be encouraged to discover new books and stories while engaging in a variety of free creative activities. Children who sign up to the challenge can track their reading as they go and be rewarded by free incentives including stickers along the way.

Children aged four to 11 are being encouraged to join the ‘Marvellous Makers' and embark on a creative journey through books and interactive activities. Taking place in libraries and online, the Challenge provides a supportive environment where young readers can explore their imaginations. Activities include junk modelling, arts and crafts, music, dance, and much more. Visit www.cardiffhubs.co.uk to find out more about the challenge and what's on in hubs across the city.

In partnership with Create, a leading arts charity, and public libraries, this year's Challenge celebrates the artistic talents of children. The bespoke artwork for the Challenge, illustrated by the celebrated artist Natelle Quek, vividly brings the "Marvellous Makers" theme to life.

A Cardiff Council spokesperson said: " The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for children to continue learning and growing over the summer months and will help prevent the "summer dip" learning loss many children experience when they aren't in school.

" By reading books and collecting incentives at hubs and libraries across Cardiff, young readers can foster their creative thinking skills over the summer break in a free, fun way to keep their young minds active. "

After signing up, children will collect their core pack. With each book they read they will get a new prize. This year they will be getting a Summer Reading Challenge stickers, Hub torch keyrings and interchangeable colour pens. Everyone who completes the challenge will also receive a medal and certificate.

It's easy to sign up, just pop into your local library or hub or sign up online here: https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/
