Here's your Tuesday update, covering; New recycling fleet proposed to increase the city's recycling rate; Corporate trainee youth worker wins prestigious award and, the clean-up in Cathays continues as students leave the city.

New recycling vehicle fleet proposed to help increase the city's recycling rate

A recycling trial - which has seen 10,000 homes across Cardiff separate their recyclable waste at the kerbside - has proven so effective that the Council is looking to buy 9 specially designed trucks to collect glass separately, so the scheme can be rolled out across the city. 

The Council will also be introducing RCV's with dual compartments to enable recycling streams to be collected separately, replacing the existing single compartment vehicles.

Residents who took part in the recycling pilot were given reusable red and blue sacks to separate their recycling into, with paper and cardboard going into red sacks, and plastic, tins and metals into blue sacks. Residents in the trial areas were already using a separate container for glass jars and bottles.

The results, when compared with the rest of the city where residents put all recyclables into green plastic bags, were startling. The contamination rate - items that are put out for recycling but cannot be recycled - reduced from 30% to approximately 6%.

Team member from Cardiff Youth Services wins the BBC Young Reporter Competition

Nevaeh Nash, Corporate Trainee Youth Worker from Cardiff Youth Services, has won the prestigious BBC Young Reporter Competition 2023 for her entry ‘My Journey to becoming a youth worker'.

Crowned as one of the regional winners for Wales,Nevaeh made a documentary about her personal experience of attending the city's Youth Service provision following the sudden death of her brother when she was 13 years old.Nevaeh had struggled to attend school and deal with the grief and anxiety, until she engaged with Cardiff Youth Service's and found youth workers and other young people that she could relate who were also facing similar struggles.

With the help of a Youth MentorNevaeh began to slowly get her life back on track, return to school, connect with other young people. She felt that finally she was understood and fell in love with youth work, so decided to become a volunteer at Gabalfa Youth Centre.

Cardiff's waste management and street cleansing teams are continuing to work in Cathays & Plasnewydd to clean and clear the streets as students leave the city for their summer holidays.

A mobile recycling truck has been out on the streets in Cathays since June 12^thwith staff knocking on doors to give students the opportunity to recycle small electrical items that would otherwise be thrown away. Two tonnes of additional recycling have been collected.

As the majority of students leave their household tenancy at the end of June, this has resulted in waste being put out onto the streets in Cathays incorrectly, but council teams are on-street continuing to clean and clear the streets until all of the waste has been removed.

As with every other city in the UK with a large student population, there will be an element of disruption while students move out and new tenants move in.

Landlords are being reminded today, that they are responsible for any waste that is left at a rented property that can't be collected as part of the kerbside waste collection service. Landlords are responsible for the safe disposal of this waste, so it shouldn't be dumped on the street.
