Cardiff Council Update: 30 September 2022

Here's your Friday update, covering: kerbside garden waste collections will be collected monthly from October 4; public consultation now open on new accommodation for The Court School; and the Challenge Fund opens applications for a £2.1m sustainable food challenge to encourage innovation in the production of locally grown food.

Kerbside garden waste collections will be collected monthly from October 4

As we move into autumn, kerbside garden waste collections will be collected monthly from October 4thuntil November 25thgiving residents two further green waste collections from their home before the service is suspended during December, January and February.

Figures show that the amount of garden waste collected from residents' homes reduces by 80% over the winter season. With this significant reduction, waste collection crews will focus on the collection of food waste, black bag waste and recycling which significantly increases as we approach the Christmas season, as people spend more time at home.

One-off collections will be arranged over the festive season to remove Christmas trees from residents' homes, with community big sweep events and the leaf fall street cleansing team continuing to operate over the winter months.

Throughout the winter, residents can continue to bring their garden waste to either recycling centre at Lamby Way or Bessemer Close by booking an appointment online through the following link  here  or via the Cardiff Gov App.

Collection calendars on the council's website and the Cardiff Gov App are being updated and the council would like to thank residents for their patience while this takes place.

One would be located on land to the south of Fairwater Primary Schoolon Wellwright Road, the other would besouth of Pen Y Bryn Primary SchoolatDunster Roadin Llanrumney.  This would utilise land at the current St Mellons CiW Primary School, following its relocation to new build accommodationlocated at the St Edeyrns development.

If plans are progressed, the new school would grow from 42 to 74 places, with 36 pupils on each site from the 2025-26 academic year, helping tomeet the city's demand for primary age specialist provision. Both sites would boast a range of comprehensive facilities including Multi-use games areas, sports and soft play areas, sports pitches and horticultural areas, delivered under Cardiff Council and Welsh Governments Band B Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.

The Challenge Fund opens applications for a £2.1m sustainable food challenge

The Challenge Fund, working in collaboration with Cardiff Council and Monmouthshire County Council, have opened applications for a new sustainable food production challenge.

The £2.1m challenge aims to identify and support projects that can harness the potential of land, technology, and people to increase the sustainable production and supply of locally grown food in the Cardiff Capital Region.

Locally grown foodpresents significant opportunities for the health of the region's economy, it's people and the planet, offering solutions to a range of issuesassociated with our existing conventional food systems which are based on complex and increasingly insecure international logistics and make a significant contribution to global carbon emissions.

The Challenge, which is a partnership between Cardiff Council, Monmouthshire County Council, the Cardiff Capital Region Challenge Fund, Welsh Government, and the SBRI (Small Business Research Initiative) Centre of Excellence, will run in three phases, with success to be evaluated by 2025.Phase one is intended to assess the feasibility of the proposed concepts, and successful applicants will be awarded 4-month feasibility contracts of up to £50,000 per project.
