Holocaust Memorial Day is an international day of remembrance for victims of the Holocaust and other genocides. The day honours the survivors and remembers those who have lost their lives. It is held on January 27 every year, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas, said: "Holocaust Memorial Day 2022 gives us all an opportunity to come together in a moment of national reflection and remembrance, honouring the victims and the survivors of the Holocaust and all genocides perpetrated since.

"Equally as important, it provides us with a platform on which we stand united against all forms of persecution, hatred and oppression, which sadly still exist today."

The Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Rod McKerlich said: "The onus is on us and each new generation to make sure that the collective memory of the Holocaust, and genocides since, endures.

"With each passing year, we sadly lose more of those directly impacted by the atrocities of the past. The lessons of history must never be forgotten nor lost; they must continue to light the way for all of us, as we resist and condemn all forms of discrimination and violence."

The First Minister, The Rt. Hon. Mark Drakeford MS, said: "Holocaust Memorial Day is a time to reflect on painful lessons from history.

"We owe a great debt of gratitude to survivors of the Holocaust - and all genocides - who spend countless hours sharing their testimonies in our communities. Their stories provide a stark warning of the dangers of hateful and divisive narratives and what can happen when people and communities are targeted and dehumanised, because of who they are.

"That's why we have a vision for Wales to be a place where everyone is respected and diversity is celebrated. We want to drive out hatred and provide a warm welcome to all. Hate Has No Home in Wales."

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is inviting members of the public to pay their respects by lighting a candle in their windows at 8pm on Thursday January 27th, where it is safe to do so. Messages of remembrance shared on social media can tag in @HMD_UK, using #HolocaustMemorialDay and #LightTheDarkness.

Buildings and landmarks will be lit in purple on the night of Thursday January 27th, 2022. Participating Cardiff buildings and landmarks include Cardiff City Hall, Cardiff Castle, The Senedd, Welsh Government building, Cathays Park, and Wales Millennium Centre.

The Trust's UK Commemorative Ceremony for National Holocaust Memorial Day will take place online at 7pm on Thursday January 27, 2022. Further details, and instructions on how to register to watch the ceremony, are available atwww.hmd.org.uk/take-part-in-holocaust-memorial-day/ukhmd/
