Cardiff Council Update: 22 October

Here is the latest update from Cardiff Council, covering: Winter and Christmas garden waste collections; Cardiff's COVID-19 case and test numbers; cases reported in Cardiff's schools in the last seven days; vaccination totals for Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan; and Ask Cardiff 2021.

Winter and Christmas garden waste collection arrangements

To help residents clear leaf fall Cardiff's garden waste collections will run until the end of November - a month later than last year.

This will ensure that residents across the city receive a garden waste collection from their home during November.

Garden Waste collections in November will take place on these dates in the following areas -Garden waste collections (cardiff.gov.uk)

Scheduled green waste collections will then resume from March 15th2022 - but there will be specific collections provided for real Christmas trees in January. More details will follow on this service In December so follow our social media accounts for information or download the CardiffGov app to your phone from the Apple Store or Google Play. 50,000 residents are already using the app to access council services.

With the exception of bank holidays, the recycling centres at Bessemer Close and Lamby Way will remain open during the winter, so recycling and garden waste can also be brought to these facilities -Garden waste collections (cardiff.gov.uk)

Cllr Michael Michael, Cabinet Member for Clean Streets and the Environment said: "The HGV driver shortage and the rising COVID infection rates in the city mean we have to prioritise services as we gear up to face the extra pressures that winter brings ever year. The amount of green waste collected in the city reduces by nearly 50% between November and December and we know this is replicated in January, February and March. Given these figures, the council has tailored the green waste collections to maximise the efficiency of waste collections and make best use of the staff that we have available during these difficult times.

"Christmas is always a very busy period for our waste collections crews collecting cardboard, recycling, and general waste - as residents produce significantly more of these types of waste over the festive period. Crews that usually collect garden waste will be moved to help their colleagues on other waste collection rounds to ensure the statutory waste services can be collected."

Ask Cardiff 2021: Make your views heard

Cardiff residents and all those who access public services in the city are being encouraged to share their views about their experiences of services.

The annual Ask Cardiff survey has launched to gather people's views about what is working well in the city and areas where improvement is needed.

The feedback collected from the survey helps the council and public service partners to better understand how people experience the city and services and to know what is important to residents and the local community. The responses also help inform plans to make changes and improvements to services.

The survey focuses on a range of topics from family services, housing, jobs, community safety, travel and health and wellbeing.

With the Council facing a budget gap of £21.3 million next year, residents are also asked for their views on how they would prioritise the Council's available resources for the next financial year.

Cabinet Member for Finance, Modernisation and Performance, Cllr Chris Weaver, said: "Ask Cardiff is such a valuable method for us to understand residents' priorities and how satisfied they are with how current services operate."
