Cardiff Council Update: 24 September

Here is the latest update from Cardiff Council, covering: improvement works to begin at Roath Park Dam; a new app for Into Work support; WOW! Improvement works to begin at Roath Park Dam

Cardiff Council has submitted a Listed Building Consent application for works to Roath Park Dam, prior to improvement works starting in Autumn 2021.

Roath Park Lake, in the heart of Cardiff, is in one of the city's most-loved parks. Although known as a lake, it is actually a manmade reservoir, formed by a dam structure along the promenade by the lighthouse and fed by the Nant Fawr Brook. 

The dam structure includes the reservoir's spillway, which is the waterfall beside the café. It is a Listed Grade II Building of Architectural or Historic Interest.

Cardiff Council is responsible for the lake's maintenance and is required to undertake regular inspections (under the Reservoirs Act 1975).  The last inspection found that the spillway would not be large enough to withstand a theoretical extreme flooding event and improvements are therefore required.

Cardiff Council has appointed Arup, a leading engineering consultancy, to undertake a study to identify the best options for ensuring the future effectiveness of the dam.

Cardiff Council are committed to working with the local community to ensure they understand the work involved and community information events have been planned so residents, businesses, and other stakeholders remain informed and updated on the project.

• Drop in events - Saturday 23 October, 09:00 - 14:00 and Tuesday 26 October, 09:30 - 15:30. Residents are encouraged to pop in and have a chat with the project team. These will take place at a pop-up information point on the promenade by the spillway next to the ranger's office.

Councillor Michael Michael, Cabinet Member for Clean Streets, Recycling and Environment said, "Climate change means we are likely to have more frequent and more intensive storms in Cardiff, so the dam spillway needs to be able to cope with the potential for these more extreme weather events."

New app for Into Work support

A new app to support jobseekers and those looking to change careers in Cardiff to access real-time information and advice about the Council's employability services is now available to download.

The Into Work Cardiff mobile app provides information on the wide range of employment support services delivered by the Council's Into Work Advice Services including job clubs, one to one mentoring projects, Adult Learning courses, training, employment event, help accessing funding and more, all at the user's fingertips on their smartphone or tablet.

Developed for Into Work Advice Services by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the app is built on TCS'DigiGOV™ frameworkand is available to download for free on theApple Storeand atGoogle Playand provides regular updates to job seekers about new training courses, events and information to help them get into a role they're interested in.

By downloading the app, users are also able to register for Into Work support, making it quicker and easier for people to get help they need to get the job they want.

Cabinet Member for Finance, Modernisation & Performance, Cllr Chris Weaver, said: "Our Into Work services have a great track record of supporting people into employment in a wide range of different sectors, helping to equip them with what they need to get back into work, supporting others to upskill to progress in their careers and get a job they really want, or into training and education."

WOW! Cardiff's walk to school programme rolled out

A record number of Cardiff school children are travelling to school in healthier and cleaner ways as part of a UK-wide walk to school programme.

WOW - the walk to school challenge from Living Streets has now been rolled out to 45 schools across the capital, making Cardiff the top Local Authority in Wales to deliver the scheme and one of the UK's top participating cities.

Delivered in joint partnership between Cardiff Council, Living Streets Cymru and in support of Cardiff's Schools Active Travel Programme, the pupil-led initiative allows children and young people to record their daily journeys to school on an interactive WOW Travel Tracker. Those pupils who travel actively (walk, cycle or scoot) for a given number of days each week are rewarded with badges, which they can collect over the year.

The Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, Sophie Howe has backed the scheme and said: "In my Manifesto for the Future, I've asked the next Welsh Government to create walkable, 20-minute neighbourhoods where people can access most of their daily needs, including school, within a safe, 20-minute walk from their home.

"By walking or cycling to school we improve air quality and reduce the number of cars on the road, making journeys safer for everyone. WOW is a fun and easy way to encourage more children and their families to walk to school, improving their health and wellbeing."

This year, the WOW badges follow the theme of ‘Walk for the World'. All WOW badges are designed by pupils in an annual badge design competition and made in the UK from repurposed plastic material, including old fridge trays and yoghurt pot off-cuts. Each school will be awarded a trophy to celebrate the class with the highest active travel each month. 

Children who live further away from school can still earn badges if families use Park and Stride or hop off the bus 10 minutes away from school and walk the rest of their journey.

Cardiff Council's Cabinet Member forTransport, Cllr Caro Wild said: "Cardiff Council has set out ambitious plans to transform active travel and public transport in the city with the aim of reducing congestion, improving air quality and combating the ongoing problems of climate change.

Success for Cardiff's School Holiday Enrichment Programme

This summer, more than 1200 children and young people accessed Cardiff's School Holiday Enrichment Programme (SHEP), meaning record numbers were able to enjoy the exciting programme of sport and educational provision, alongside healthy nutritious meals.

Headline figures:

• More than 1200 children and young people accessed the provision during the 6-week school holiday period
• Over 22,000 healthy breakfasts and lunches were served by Education Catering teams
• More than 5000 family food bags were delivered providing over 20,000 meals to pupils and their families to enjoy at home
• 2016 hours of provision was delivered at 28 schools across the city
• Over 30 partner organisations provided more than 1200 sessions  
• 46 school staff received training to deliver nutrition education sessions

Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry said: "I am delighted that so many children and young people had the opportunity to take part in this year's Food and Fun programme and I was fortunate to attend some of the sessions and experience first-hand, the ways in which the scheme benefits our communities."
