Interactive events from Willows High School

Ever wondered how an elephant cleans its teeth or how to fit a bowling ball inside a vacuum?

Answers to these questions and many more will be explained by a demonstrator from Techniquest during ‘Staggering Science', a live event organised by Willows High School.

The third in a series of events organised by teachers at the school, the session aims to give primary school children the chance to take part in fun, interactive lessons during lockdown.

Assistant Head Teacher, Ian Whittaker said: "In usual circumstances, we would be visiting all the primary schools in our area to engage with children from Years 5 and 6 who might be considering Willows as an option for secondary school.

"As this can't happen at the moment, we came up with the idea to hold fun, interactive live lessons so that they can still experience first-hand what Willows has to offer.

"The events are free and although we initially targeted our catchment primary schools, anyone can join us. Parents just need to book their free ticket via our Eventbrite page."

So far more than 180 children have attended the events which have included ‘Magical Maths' with Mr Batchelor who used his skills as a magician to explain how maths can be found in nature,  and ‘Tales of Adventure' with Ms. Amos, who's drama and English skills made creative story writing come to life.

Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry said: "This is a fine example of how innovative teaching is being used to engage children, during what has been an extremely challenging year for our youngest citizens.

"Staff from Willows High School have used their imagination to create fun and inspiring lessons, adapting the way they engage with potential new pupils to the school. It is great to learn that primary schools have also included the events as part of their own blended learning provision."
