Cardiff Marks VJ Day 75

15/8/20
Today, August 15, 2020, is the 75th anniversary of VJ Day, commemorating the surrender of Japan and the end of the Second World War.

To mark VJ Day this year, The Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Dan De'Ath and The Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas took part in a wreath laying ceremony at the National War Memorial, at the Civic Centre in Cardiff earlier today.

Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Dan De'Ath, said: "The Far East witnessed thousands of service men and women continuing to serve in conflict for more than three months after the fighting came to an end in Europe. VJ Day provides us all with an opportunity to remember those that served in the Asia-Pacific, action which ultimately brought the Second World War to an end.

Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas, said: "It is important that this period of history is not forgotten. The 75thanniversary of VJ Day brings with it an added significance, and a further chance to bring the actions of thousands of service personal into the minds of another generation."

The Lord Mayor and Council Leader were joined in the wreath laying by the Lord Lieutenant of South Glamorgan, the First Minister of Wales, Royal Navy, Army and RAF lead officers and a representative of the Royal British Legion.

On August 4, the Lord Mayor laid a wreath at Wales' National Service of Thanksgiving, which took place at Llandaff Cathedral. A recording of that service is available to watch onthe Llandaff Cathedral YouTube channel.
