Cardiff Council tops residents' satisfaction chart

07/08/20

Cardiff residents are the happiest in Wales with their council's services a new Welsh Government survey has revealed.

The National Survey of Wales is a large scale survey of adults across the country, covering a range of topics such as wellbeing and people's views on public services.

In the reporting year from April 2019 to March 2020 the survey found that Cardiff residents were the most satisfied in Wales with services provided by their council.

When asked their views on whether their local authority provides high-quality services, 58% of surveyed residents in the capital replied that they agreed; 22% said they neither agreed or disagreed; and 21% disagreed.

Cardiff Council Cabinet Member for Finance, Modernisation and Performance said: "This is welcome news and good to see. Despite the huge cuts to our budget - with almost a quarter of a billion pounds made in savings over the past 10 years - we have always been intent on improving the Council's performance. This independent survey shows that we are moving in the right direction, but we won't rest here. I want residents to know that we are not complacent and that we are committed to ensuring they get the best value for money and the public services they deserve.

"This survey was conducted before the COVID-19 lockdown, which has really brought to the forefront of all our minds the absolute importance of good public services. I'm really proud of the dedication, work and courage displayed by all our staff who have gone to extraordinary lengths during the pandemic to ensure the effect of lockdown has been minimised on residents.   I want to take this opportunity to thank those workers again for all their efforts. But we won't look back, our aim is to always improve what we do for our city's residents."

From 2016-17 onwards the National Survey for Wales also contains topics that were previously included in the Welsh Health Survey, the Arts in Wales Survey, the Welsh Outdoor Recreation Survey and the Active Adults Survey. The main reporting year runs from April each year to March the following year, with detailed results published annually.

The telephone survey involves over 1,000 people a month, with the topics updated each month. It covers a representative random sample of people aged 16+ across Wales, including people who are more difficult to reach and people who don't use the internet.

The Office for Statistics Regulation has independently assessed the survey and confirmed that it meets National Statistics standards of trustworthiness, quality and value.
