Dear ‘Diff Diaries: Back to school for city’s children and young people

7/7/20
Children and young people across the city are being encouraged to record their next chapter in
The ‘Diff Diaries project - the return to school.

As schools across the city have started welcoming pupils back this week for their ‘Check In, Catch up and Prepare' sessions, project organiser, The Cardiff Commitment, is reminding young diarists that there's still time to take part and submit an entry.

More than 75 entries have already been submitted as part of the project which was launched in April for seven to 16-year-olds to share their experiences during the COVID-19 crisis and document their activity, thoughts and feelings in video recordings, photo collages or written diary entries during the lockdown period.

Supported by Principality Building Society, Museum of Cardiff, Screen Alliance Wales and University of South Wales, the project will continue over the next few weeks giving young people across the city the opportunity to capture their experience of returning to school in their diaries.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry said: "We have been really impressed by the ‘Diff Diaries we've received so far, and as we approach the end of this school year - one I'm sure none of us will forget in a hurry, we're encouraging children and young people to submit an entry to the project during this unprecedented period.

"Cardiff is committed to becoming a child friendly city and a part of that is ensuring that the voices and experiences of children and young people are heard through the pandemic. We want to hear from as many pupils and students as possible from all parts of the city. We've had lots of entries from girls and want to ensure we hear from boys in our schools as well to ensure we are capturing a broad range of experiences of these times.

"As we begin to exit lockdown, children and young people's emotions and the activities they are able to do will no doubt be different to their feelings and experiences from the beginning of lockdown.  Going back to school is a significant milestone and we're keen to have these

Entries can be submitted in both Welsh and English and must be uploaded via the Hwb Platform (https://sites.google.com/hwbcymru.net/the-covid-19-diff-diaries/home) Parental consent must be given before entries are submitted.

A weekly prize for entries is up for grabs, thanks to Principality Building Society who are giving away two rugby balls - one for the best diary each week and one for the weekly winner's friend or family member. Six lucky winners who have entered The Diff Diaries have already received their prizes.

A film festival showcasing entries which have been selected by a panel of young people, education and industry experts will be held after the health crisis.
