Equipping young people for creative industries

Work is due to start on the remodelling of Butetown Youth Pavilion to establish a new creative hub for young people in the area.

The facility on Dumballs Road is set to undergosubstantial building improvements to deliver a new space where current youth service provision will be complemented by the provision of additional services to help prepare young people for work, with a focus on careers in the creative industries, as well as helping to engage young people in a wide range of training opportunities.

Welsh Government, Targeted Regeneration and Investment funding has been secured to part fund the project, which will focus on delivering better employability services and skills development, particularly in the creative sector for young people. The new hub will assist people with training, volunteering opportunities, mentoring and money advice as well.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: "The creative industries sector is becoming the fastest growing area of the economy, often driven by the user-generated content of young adults.  The establishment of BBC Wales' new headquarters in the city centre, as well as the established industry around the city and bay affords a wealth of opportunities for young people so we have to ensure we have the facilities and right pathways available in the city to equip them with the skills and confidence to enter this industry.

"The Council is committed to taking positive steps to improve opportunities for young people and the new creative hub will do this withjoined-up and integrated service provision, with a clear focus on positive engagement, confidence-building, reducing barriers and extending opportunities for 16 to 25-year-olds."

The remodelling of the existing building will create multi-use spaces and a relaxed atmosphere, allowing for the continuation of youth activities and events alongside facilities where young people can develop their work skills.

The project will design and equip the centre as an area for young adults to express themselves and explore their creativity in an environment that will respect and nurture their ideas.

The hub will include a new and improved layout, incorporating a film editing suite, new social area and external landscaping work to enable a new side entrance to be used for the social youth space in the evenings. The facility is expected to be completed in Spring 2020.
