Fairwater Day Centre opening

The remodelling of day centre provision for older people in the city has concluded, with the completion of refurbishment works to Fairwater Day Centre.

Fairwater has been the final of three day centres in the city to undergo renovation, as part of the Council's investment in and vision for services and facilities that meet the aspirations and requirements of older people with social care needs.

The investment began in early 2017when works to upgradeMinehead Road Day Centre in Llanrumney began. The opening of a new specialist dementia centre, in partnership with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board at Grand Avenue, followed last year while the redesign and refurbishment of Fairwater Day Centre completes the programme.

The improvement works have been funded by Cardiff Council, with grants from Welsh Government.

The newest centre boasts a dementia-friendly environment and new facilities appropriate to meeting the needs of people with high care and support needs. The Council's Meals on Wheels Service, delivering hot nutritious meals to customers across Cardiff and parts of the Vale of Glamorgan, is also based at the day centre which was officially opened recently by Welsh Government Minister for Health and Social Services, Vaughan Gething AM.

Cabinet Member for Social Care, Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Susan Elsmore, said: "Day centres in Cardiff have been absolutely transformed in the last few years and we are extremely proud of these first-class facilities and the services they deliver to older people in the city.

"All three of our day centres have been redesigned to provide a better quality, more flexible day care services in supportive and enabling environments where some of the most vulnerable people in the city can feel safe, valued and understood."
