Pen-Y-Bryn Primary School in Cardiff has been judged by Estyn as good, the second highest rating possible, across all five of the areas the education inspectorate for Wales looks at. 

Following a visit in July, Estyn inspectors found that the primary school in Llanrumney had a ‘very caring and inclusive ethos, which emphasises the wellbeing of pupils.' 

The inspectors also reported pupils showing ‘a high level of respect and tolerance towards others', and that they are ‘very well behaved and display positive attitudes towards learning.' 

Their report goes on to say that ‘quality of teaching across the school is good', noting that the curriculum is broad and balanced, engaging pupils well. 

Estyn also recognised the ‘positive impact on many aspects of the life and work of the school' that recently appointed Headteacher, Mr Ceri Bowen has had. 

Giving his reaction to Estyn's findings, Mr Bowen said: "We are delighted with the outcome of our recent inspection. We are particularly pleased to see Estyn's recognition of the levels of respect and tolerance displayed by pupils as well as the very caring and inclusive ethos which emphasises the well-being of pupils. 

"I would like to highlight the dedication and determination of all the school staff, past and present, in ensuring that pupils achieve the best they possibly can. We are a strong team who work well together to develop a clear vision for the school's future development." 

Chair of Governors, Claire Deguara, added: "Pen y Bryn has been through significant changes in recent years and the success of our most recent Estyn report would not have been achieved without the collaborative working of our very committed team of staff at the school. 

"They put children at the heart of everything they do and embody our motto ‘where children come first'.  The community has also played its part in supporting the school and we are very grateful for their continued support." 

Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council and Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry, said: "I am delighted that Estyn has recognised the good standards reached thanks to everyone involved in Pen-y-Bryn Primary School. 

"The hard work of Mr Bowen and all the staff, the Governing Body, the children and parents has really paid off, and they should all feel rightly proud of what they have achieved so far. I know there is a determination now to continue the hard work, as Pen-y-Bryn primary strives for excellence."
