Consultation proposed to address Llanrumney's primary school place surplus

A proposal to consult on options to address the high number of surplus primary school places in the Llanrumney area of Cardiff is to be considered by the Council's Cabinet when it meets on Thursday, July 12.

At present, 20 percent of primary school places in the area are unfilled. Of the six primary schools in Llanrumney, Glan-Yr-Afon has the largest surplus, with nearly half of its 292 places currently available. Even after taking predicted population growth and planned housing developments into account, forecasts show that the surplus would remain.

In order to reduce the number of surplus places in the area, a report to Cabinet recommends consultation on a proposal to close Glan-Yr-Afon primary, with alternative places available at other local schools.

Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry, said: "It is important that we consult with a wide range of stakeholders to explore possible solutions, as the current level of surplus is unsustainable, placing a huge strain on resources at a time when we are facing an unprecedented funding challenge for our schools.

"Surplus places have a significant impact on school budgets, as an element of the funding is determined by pupil numbers. Finding a way of reducing the surplus primary school places in Llanrumney is therefore a priority."
