Estyn recognises Ysgol Pwll Coch as a good school all round

An inspection by education watchdog Estyn has found that Ysgol Pwll Coch is ‘good' across all five areas it looked at.

Inspectors visited the school earlier this year to see how the Welsh-medium primary school in Canton is performing in terms of: standards; wellbeing and attitudes to learning; teaching and learning experiences; care, support and guidance; and leadership and management.

They found that the staff ‘create a happy, caring and inclusive ethos at the school, where everyone is respected and appreciated.'

Estyn's inspection report goes on to say that the teaching ‘nurtures a supportive and industrious learning environment', where ‘pupils behave very well and are keen to learn.'

Teachers at the school ‘plan practical, stimulating and rich learning experiences' and, as a result pupils, ‘achieve well and use their skills to a high standard.'

The school's robust leadership ‘ensures a clear strategic direction' and promotes a vision that focuses on ‘aiming for excellence.'

There is strong support from staff who ‘all believe in the school's vision and work towards achieving it.'

Headteacher of Ysgol Pwll Coch, Mr Christopher Newcombe, said: "I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this success. As a school we are thrilled with our inspection report and will now continue to develop and evolve as we aim for excellence for all our learners. I am delighted that Estyn has recognised the commitment of each member of our school community.

"We have amazing pupils, and I am very proud of all my staff and delighted that Estyn has recognised the quality of teaching. The governing body is very experienced and I am grateful for the energetic and professional support and challenge offered."

Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council and Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry, said: "Congratulations to Mr Newcombe, all the staff, pupils, governors and everyone involved with Ysgol Pwll Coch in achieving such good results in the Estyn inspections. I know everyone at the school has put such a lot of hard work into ensuring this success, and I also know the commitment and determination they have in working towards excellence in the future. I am looking forward to adding my congratulations in person when I next visit Ysgol Pwll Coch."
