Service and weather update - Issued 5.30pm Sunday, March 4

Here is the latest news on the roads, the weather, school openings and waste collections as the snow begins to melt and things begin to get back to normal. That’s all from the Council for tonight we will be back with you tomorrow morning

Winter maintenance 

Primary routes around the city are now clear for vehicle movements and secondary routes are navigable in many cases.

As the weather improves and the temperature rises the grit is reacting with the snow and helping to speed up the thawing process. 

Much of the city network should return to normality by tomorrow although there may be some pockets of slower-to-melt snowdrifts caused by the weekend’s storm.

Our Winter Maintenance teams have been out today working to support the opening of schools tomorrow. We’ve seen lots of parents and residents get involved in the clear up too, so thank you to those who are taking part and helping to clear parking spaces and entrances.

Council teams have also been clearing shopfronts in primary shopping areas and our outreach teams have been helping the homeless come in to our shelters.

Since last Monday Cardiff Council has spread more than 500 tonnes of grit. An average winter season (3 months) sees 2000 tonnes in total used.

The weather was exceptional, this was a severe red weather warning, our drivers and teams were out in freezing rain and blizzard conditions trying to keep emergency routes clear, helping the vulnerable, delivering meals on wheels, carrying out emergency repairs and helping social services and the emergency services in hazardous conditions.

But we want to take this opportunity to thank you, our residents, for bearing with us - and for all your support - as we worked to help those in real need and get the city back up and running.

Tonight, there is a slight risk of black ice on paths later, so anyone walking should take extra care, especially on areas which have been cleared of snow, but which may be untreated with salt/grit.

Recycling & Waste Collections-Plan for the week commencing Monday, March 5

During the severe disruption which prevented collections on Thursday and Friday, waste crews were redeployed and worked tirelessly alongside cleansing and highways teams on gritting, supporting vulnerable people via other critical services, and driving 4x4s delivering help where needed.

Household Waste and Recycling Centres

Both Lamby Way and Bessemer Close centres re-opened today and will be open as normal tomorrow.

(Wedal Road centre is now permanently closed)

Schools

The Council issued advice to all schools earlier today to open on Monday, March 5 to both pupils and staff where possible.  The final decision to open the school remains that of the Headteacher and the Chair of Governors. Parents are therefore advised to check for messages from their schools for the latest information. 

Given the conditions over the past few days, there may be some school sites which will continue to be affected by drifts and some ice patches which could affect opening on a limited number of sites. To assist clearance the Council is arranging to prioritise gritting to schools with known accessibility issues and significant numbers of children with transport needs.

Council facilities

Many of our buildings have been able to open as usual today, including Cardiff Castle, Norwegian Church and Tourism Information Centres.

St David’s Hall and the New Theatre will reopen tomorrow.

Our hubs and main buildings will all be open tomorrow although services to the public may be limited at County Hall where we have experienced some building issues. Please call before visiting to ensure you don’t make a wasted journey.

Managing flood risk as the snow thaws

EVAC Cardiff has issued the following advice:

During the thaw please be proactive to ensure any drains on/by pavements/highways are free from snow and ice to prevent issues with flooding and protect properties.
