New Love Where You Live Initiative at Grangetown Hub

The Love Where You Live Campaign is launching a new initiative to encourage people to volunteer their time to keep their communities clean and tidy.

On October 25th, the Council is working with Keep Grangetown Tidy to launch an event at Grangetown Hub to create even more litter champions. All Grangetown residents are invited to attend.

The idea of the initiative is to give residents the necessary training and access to litter picking equipment directly from the hub. They can then borrow and sign out the equipment for up to two weeks. When they complete the training they become a litter champion.

High visibility vests, protective gloves, litter picks and hoops, pink and green bags and first aid kits will be made available for the litter champions to use.

Cllr Michael Michael, Cabinet Member for Clean Streets and Recycling is keen for as many people to get involved as possible.

Cllr Michael said: "The Keep Grangetown Tidy group has been working hard with the Council for some time, but often volunteers are unable to carry out litter picks alongside the Council during the working week due to other commitments.

"The idea of this new initiative is to provide the equipment directly to the volunteers so they are able to arrange their community litter picks when it is convenient for them.

"When they become a litter champion, they will be given a library card which allows them access the hub to collect the equipment when they want.

"All we ask is that the volunteers use the equipment provided when they go on their litter pick, report any hazardous materials such as broken glass, needles, dog fouling or fly tipping and don't attempt to collect these items.

"A log sheet will also be provided so that the volunteers can record their litter picks that they carry out so they know how many bags they have collected. Bags that are full of litter should then be put next to litter bins in the area so they can be collected by council staff.

"If the initiative is successful, we will look to expand the scheme to different areas of the city in the New Year."

The event on October 25thwill begin with a litter pick at 10.00am followed by a community gathering and refreshments at the hub.

Residents that would like to get involved are asked to emaillovewhereyoulive@cardiff.gov.uk.
