Physio Plus urges 65s and over to minimise risk of falling

Physio Plus, the Chippenham-based orthopaedic and sports clinic, is reminding people aged 65 and over about the benefits of physiotherapy.

There are 11.4 million people aged 65 or over in the UK and, according the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), one in three of these people fall every year. And half of those will fall again within 12 months.*

Furthermore as the body gets older, it becomes more prone to seizing up and stiffness. Health problems and injuries can also hamper muscle and joint function and the free movement of limbs.

Comprising a physiotherapist, an osteopath, a massage therapist and a medical herbalist/Koren Specific Technique practitioner, the Physio Plus team is ideally equipped to alleviate pain, improve your mobility and help you rebuild your fitness.

Having been shown to improve factors associated with ageing, such as strength, balance, co-ordination, flexibility and pain, physiotherapy can significantly reduce your risk of a fall.

It can also make day-to-day activities easier. Walking, climbing stairs and getting in and out of cars and beds are all more manageable with regular physiotherapy.

Similarly, it can help you recover from a fall or an operation.

Physio Plus’s clinic is fully equipped to treat a wide range of conditions, including:

·               back and/or neck pain

·               joint pain due to conditions such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis

·               repetitive strain injury (RSI)

·               accidents/sports injuries to ligaments, tendons, muscles and joints following trauma to your ankle, knee, hip, back, neck, shoulder, elbow or hands

·               neurological problems affecting the nervous system, such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis

·               breathing problems caused by conditions such as asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

·               osteoporosis

·               heart disease

Andrew Baldwin, director and clinical lead orthopaedic physiotherapy specialist at Physio Plus, said: “The CSP’s figures are stark, yet borne out by our experience. We know that up to a quarter of those people age 65 or over who fall sustain serious injury. We also know these injuries – together with those sustained in recurrent falls - are a leading cause of mortality in people over 75. That’s why we’re calling on people in this age group to minimise their risk and get in touch. And if you can’t get to us, don’t worry – we’ll come out to you.”

Physio Plus works with health professionals, including general practitioners and orthopaedic consultants, to deliver a seamless care service. It’s proactive in rehabilitation, offering both passive and active treatment.
