Labcell introduces ruggedised soil moisture sensor

Labcell has introduced the low-cost GS1 soil moisture sensor that is a ruggedised version of the existing entry-level sensor for measuring soil moisture. This new model is designed for applications in warmer, wetter conditions or where rougher handling is anticipated.
Two durable stainless steel needles protrude from the sealed epoxy housing and cut through the soil or soilless media for easier installation and better contact. These needles are considerably more robust than the sensor blades used on conventional volumetric water content sensors.
Thanks to its low price, the GS1 is suitable for use in long-term applications with large sensor networks for monitoring soil moisture at different depths and locations. The GS1 is sensitive to even small changes in soil moisture anywhere within the range 0 - 100 per cent VWC; accuracy is +/-0.03 m3/m3 in typical soils or +/- 0.01 to 0.02 m3/m3 with soil-specific calibration.
Manufactured by Decagon Devices, the GS1 sensors can be used with Decagon's Em50 data logger as well as SDI-12 compatible loggers from other manufacturers.
