Local Restaurants Get StreetSmart This Winter
Restaurants throughout Cornwall are preparing to get StreetSmart this winter, in an annual drive to raise funds for three local charities.
StreetSmartis a national campaign that aims to raise money each year for the homeless and vulnerable, via a voluntary £1 donation added to restaurant bills during November and December.
As all administration costs are paid by national StreetSmart sponsor, Deutsche Bank, 100% of the money raised goes directly to the charities - therefore, every pound donated in Cornwall will benefit St Petroc's Society, Cornwall Women's Refuge Trust and the Cornish branches of Foodbank.
Restaurants taking part in the Cornish arm of this year's campaign include Archie Browns in Truro and Penzance, Old School Bar and Kitchen in Mount Hawke, No.4 Peterville in St Agnes, Halsetown Inn near St Ives, the Beach Club restaurant at Carbis Bay Hotel & Estate, Kota and Kota Kai in Porthleven, The Boathouse in Falmouth and The Square at Porthleven.
Caroline Perkins, Manager of Archie Browns Health Food Shops and Cafes, is pleased to be helping the homeless again this year, saying:
"Archie Browns in both Truro and Penzance are pleased to be supporting StreetSmart once again. We know that every bit of help, however small, is vital for these local charities. As the weather turns colder we should all play our part to help the homeless and vulnerable, especially in our local communities. StreetSmart has been very well received by our customers in past years, and we hope that we can continue to make a difference in Cornwall with this year's donations."
Bernie Tullin, Manager of Cornwall Women's Refuge Trust, is pleased that the campaign will be running in the county again this year, saying:
"Cornwall Women's Refuge Trust would like to acknowledge and thank StreetSmart for their continued support, and specifically the public for their generous donations."
James Milton,Southern England Foodbank Network Manager, is also thankful for support from StreetSmart restaurants and their customers, saying:
"With the economic pressures pushing more Cornwall residents into food crisis, foodbanks in the Trussell Trust network now operate from 20 locations around the county. The Trussell Trust is immensely grateful for StreetSmart's support for these vital local charities, enabling emergency food parcels to reach those facing real hunger in Cornish communities".
Corinna Langford at St Petroc's Society is grateful for the money raised each year by the campaign, saying:
"St Petroc's Society are yet again delighted to be supported by StreetSmart throughout the 2015 campaign. Our cold weather provisions throughout the winter months provide a place of safety and warmth for the homeless during some of the harshest weather conditions - this is all made possible by the generous donations of the StreetSmart campaign."
Whether you're enjoying an evening of great food or dining out to celebrate the festive season, please choose a StreetSmart restaurant and help the many vulnerable people in Cornwall during the challenging winter ahead. If your restaurant would like to join the campaign to raise funds for these three vital charities in Cornwall, there's still time to sign up. FURTHER INFO:
St Petroc's Societyoffers housing and support for those homeless and single in our area. Supported houses give much-needed breathing space to some of the most vulnerable people in Cornwall. StreetSmart funds have been used to support Cold Weather Provision, giving the homeless a place to rest and sleep whenever the temperature drops below zero.
Cornwall Women's Refuge Trustprovides a safe and supportive environment for women and children who have escaped domestic abuse. They have also recently opened the South West's first refuge for male victims of domestic abuse. Previously, StreetSmart funds have been used to refurbish bedrooms and run support groups to help with building self-esteem and other important life skills.
Foodbankhas branches throughout the county and delivers food to local people in crisis. They rely on food donated by members of the public, which is then distributed through a network of dedicated volunteers. Additionally, there are always advisors on hand to give information about benefits, rights and other sources of support.
