Familiar Face At Polwhele House

An independent school in Truro has welcomed back a familiar face with the appointment of their new Housemother this term.

Polwhele House has welcomed back Tara Hounsell in the role of Housemother, after a 13 year break.

Tara first joined Polwhele House in 1989 on a work placement for a course in Nursery Nursing. After completing the course in 1991, she was soon offered a full-time role as classroom assistant before progressing to Housemother in 1997.

As Housemother, Tara acts as the ‘mum' to Polwhele House's boarders, cooking breakfast and evening meals, washing clothes and bedding and making sure the children have showers, brush their teeth, brush their hair - and have fun!

She is delighted to be able to return to the role, saying:

"Polwhele has been a huge part of my life and when the opportunity came up to return there wasn't any doubt in my mind that I wanted the job. I now have a three year old daughter, Maddie, and for her to be part of such an amazing school and environment made the decision even easier. She loves being part of the boarding house and is thriving in the Nursery class."

Polwhele House introduced boarding in response to parental requests, and has progressed to become a home-from-home to many children, including 16 this year, with interest increasing.

The scheme means that the school is an even more close-knit community; it also ensures stability and continuity of education for children whose parents work long and unpredictable hours and provides ideal preparation for the transfer to senior boarding schools at 13.

In addition, the children learn independence, have fun and are involved in lots of activities with their peers.

Headmaster of Polwhele House, Alex McCullough said:

"It is fantastic to welcome Tara back into the Polwhele House family. It is important that children who board with us feel at home, happy and can enjoy themselves. Under Tara's supervision, we are safe in the knowledge that all our boarders are benefitting from the highest standards of care."

Polwhele House is one of the only schools in the county to offer boarding and prides itself on a flexible approach that can suit families from all circumstances - offering overnight stays on 1, 2, 3 or 4 weekday nights per week.

Boarding life wraps itself around the main school, and the spirit of friendship and a wide variety of shared interests and activities carry on through into the evening, complemented by a routine which includes homework, music practice, activities and free time.

The boarding facilities are located in the main building of the school and the boarding family includes the Headmaster and his wife, committed House Tutors, the Choral Scholar, and the resident Housemother.
