Renovated Bedrooms Revealed At Historic Estate

Pengenna Manor, a historic estate near Wadebridge in North Cornwall, has unveiled four newly renovated bedrooms for the use of guests.

The luxurious rooms allow newly-wed couples and other guests to stay overnight at the manor house for the first time, completing a unique wedding experience.

Pengenna Manor has medieval origins and has been through several reincarnations - including a dramatic extension during the reign of Elizabeth I and additions in the 18thCentury - to become what it is today; a unique venue for weddings and lavish private parties.

Proprietor Richard Blewett, whose family have lived at Pengenna for 150 years, unveiled the four distinctive interior designs this September.

He explained: "Each has been styled differently, with hand-selected or specially made furnishings and accessories, and all of the rooms feature antiques and paintings collected by the family over the years."

The star of the show is undoubtedly the art deco inspired Bridal Suite; this features unique fabric designed by Richard and specially printed in America, a lavish bathroom with 1920s-style fittings and hidden ultra-modern technology, a super king-size bed, Egyptian cotton sheets and luxurious robes and towels.

Guests also enjoy exclusive use of Pengenna's Drawing Room, where breakfast is served in the morning and families and friends can relax together throughout their time on the estate.

As Richard explained; "Pengenna is still a family home and, from the time our guests arrive to the time they leave, it's their home too."

The majority of people will be able to experience Pengenna Manor as part of a wedding party, as Richard and his team host ceremonies of all sizes and descriptions throughout the year.

Richard said; "Now family or members of the bridal party can arrive the night before and enjoy the historic surroundings whilst they prepare, take time out on the wedding day itself, and of course relax the following morning before they depart."

Richard also hosts other private celebrations, including anniversaries and special birthdays, and has plans to extend the on-site accommodation to host larger groups over the next two years as he continues to renovate buildings on the 300 acre estate.

FURTHER INFO:

Pengenna Manor, an imposing residence, has its origins as a small single-roomed, double-height, medieval hall house. During the reign of Elizabeth 1stit was greatly extended, to include 14 rooms and even a private family chapel. It was later refaced with a grand frontage in the late 17th century by a wealthy member of the clergy - Thomas Pocock. Pengenna was further extended in the 18th century with a small Georgian extension, and the 19th century with a Victorian kitchen.

The Grade II* listed Manor boasts a wealth of period features that makes it historically significant, including one of the earliest relief plasterwork friezes in the county depicting Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden with the serpent who tempted Eve curling around the tree of temptation.

The Manor house has now been within same family for generations, with the current owner Richard Blewett becoming the 7th generation of the Blewett family to take up residence in the property. Over 150 years ago his ancestors were tenant farmers of the Manor under their landlords, the Molesworth St Aubyns, of Pencarrow House near Bodmin. Fifty years later the Blewetts bought the manor and its land for the princely sum of £2,500 and the family have lived there ever since.
