Awareness of dangers of heart disease still worryingly low

Just over half (51%) of adults are still not aware that heart disease is the biggest health-related cause of death in the UK, according to research from Sirco, a scientifically proven drink to help maintain cardiovascular health and benefit circulation of the blood.

As a consequence of this lack of awareness, 20% of all British adults have never done anything to actively try to improve their heart health.

And, despite the fact that heart disease is one of the main causes of death in the UK, less than half of adults say they exercise more, while 39% have cut down on their intake of saturated fats, and 37% have cut down on their salt intake.

Facts about heart disease:

• An average of 417 people per day (152,436 people) have died in the UK over the last year from heart disease,

• A third of all deaths (and rising) in adults in the UK are caused by heart disease either due to cholesterol or platelet function

• If the trend remains the same over three million people will be at risk over the next 20 years

• Globally, almost a third of deaths are caused by heart disease

Beverley Brealey, from Sirco, said: "It is disturbing that awareness of the dangers of heart disease is still very low. More worrying is that as a nation we are not doing enough to look after our heart health and taking simple precautions, such as diet and exercise."
