Charity calls on the ladies of Surrey to get on their bike to help others
In the Surrey area alone, 15 people hear the devastating news that they have cancer every single day and a further 7 people, sadly, lose their battle with the disease. Macmillan Cancer Support have estimated that the number of people living with cancer in Surrey will more than double between 2010 and 2030, by which time they expect to see an increase of 101% in the number of people living with or beating cancer.
These statistics are shocking, yet it is a reality, and Macmillan Cancer Support hope it will encourage the ladies of Surrey to get on their bikes on Sunday 6th September to take part in Macmillan Cycletta, the UK’s leading series of women-only bike rides, to raise funds to help continue their support.
Riona Doidge, Regional Challenge Events Programme Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support explained why their support is so important. She said:
“Within Surrey we have 183 Macmillan professionals who work in local clinical environments and the community. In 2013, Macmillan Support Line identified £806,494 in unclaimed benefits for local people. However, unfortunately there are still many, many more who need our support.
“Events like Macmillan Cycletta give individuals the opportunity to both challenge themselves and raise crucial funds for people who need it most.”
It’s just a few weeks until Macmillan Cycletta Surrey takes place at the beautiful Loseley Park, Guildford and there’s still places available for the event on September 6th. The event is open to women of all ages and abilities and includes distances ranging from 20km to a challenging 150km.
Gillian Daly, Senior PR Manager at Macmillan Cycletta commented:
“The event is inclusive of all women, regardless of cycling experience or ability. Not only will you have a great day out in the scenic Surrey countryside, but you will be helping to raise much needed funds for people affected by cancer.”
For the younger cycling enthusiasts, all events in the Macmillan Cycletta series include a Scootathlon taking place on the same day. The Scootathlon is a mini fun triathlon for children between the ages of 4 and 8 where they scoot, bike and run.
Each Macmillan Cycletta takes place in stunning surroundings, on safe well-managed roads and with loads of fun for all the family. Ladies are encouraged to bring the whole clan along to cheer them on.
The Macmillan Cycletta website offers a host of information on training, race day advice and bike maintenance. There is also an active Twitter account (@cycletta) and www.facebook.com/cycletta resources to encourage participants to stay up-to-date with the latest news and developments. Macmillan Cycletta is part of the Human Race Women Only series which includes triathlon, swimming, running and cycling events.
