PRESS RELEASE 24 | 08 | 15

Colin Orchard RBA at 80
10 to 31 October 2015
Midday Sunlight, Venice | Oil on Board
In celebration of the artist’s 80th year, New Craftsman presents an exhibition of work by Colin Orchard RBA, one of Cornwall’s most respected painters.
This new collection of 40 oil on board works takes the artist back to some of his favourite subjects, including landscapes of Cornwall, and of his travels to Suffolk, Venice and Tuscany, along with a series of his distinctive fictional subjects in fictional interiors. Drawn from both observation and snatches of remembered scenes his powerfully composed, square format paintings are strongly figurative, but also embrace areas of deliberate abstraction and strong, unmoderated brush marks. Exuding an air of late 19th Century painting in form and palette, Orchard’s subjects are in fact highly contemporary and the paradox of early modern style and 21st century subject give his paintings a uniquely appealing quality.
Colin Orchard is a member of the Royal
Society of British Artists. He has exhibited
at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and galleries including David
Messum, Medici, Walker Galleries, Ainscough and New Grafton. He was
elected a member of the RBA in 2007 upon winning the Artist Award at their
exhibition that same year.
This exhibition will be accompanied
by a collection of pieces by jeweller and metalsmith Cornelius Jakob van Dop.
