Building Better Communities competition

Builders' merchant, Jewson, has been asking people up and down the country to nominate community projects that are in need of a transformation and, after over 2,000 entries and a shortlist of 63 entries, 14 winners have been announced.

As part of its Building Better Communities initiative, of which Norbord is a contributing partner, Jewson has awarded 14 community building projects a share of £100,000. The prize money will help pay for supplies and labour in order to make improvements to these projects that remain close to the communities' hearts.

The top prize of £50,000 was awarded to Penlee RNLI Lifeboat Station in Penzance and the money will be used to re-erect the 31-year-old lifeboat base.

A team of 60 judges, including Norbord's David Connacher along with Jewson employees and other supplier partners, narrowed the 2,000 entries down to 63. The projects were judged on legacy, the impact of the project, the strength of the applications and the sustainable products which could be used to improve the building.

David Fenton, Marketing Director at Jewson, said: "A huge congratulations goes out to all the Building Better Communities competition finalists. We can't wait to see the positive effect the prize money will have as we move into the build phase. We'd also like to thank everyone who got involved in the project, either by nominating, voting or spreading the word.

"By donating our sustainable building materials and expertise to develop community facilities across the UK, we aim to improve the comfort of the buildings, thehealth and well-being of users and where possible make a positive impact on reducing energy bills and the building's impact on the environment."
