New Compressor Opens the Door to Savings at Schlegel

An unreliable air compressor was causing major production problems for Schlegel Building Products, a leader in the design, development, manufacture and distribution of door and window components, located in Newton Aycliffe. The compressor often broke down, creating a situation where there was not enough compressed air to power the weatherseal-making machinery on site.

David Golightly, Schlegel's Engineering Manager, contacted Thorite's local North Shields Sales and Service Centre for assistance and a sales engineer arranged to visit the site. It was decided that as the compressor was not getting any younger it made sense to opt for a new replacement rather continuing to spend more on repairs.

Thorite is the UK's biggest independent pneumatic products and process systems distributor, and their engineer recommended the installation of an HPC compressor which would ensure maximum efficiency whilst occupying minimal space. Schlegel had previously bought 3 new HPC compressors from Thorite for another of their sites and were already impressed with the efficiency levels these machines were achieving, so it made complete sense to specify an HPC compressor once again.

The model selected is an HPC ASD50 compressor with a capacity of 4.58 m³/min at 7.5 bar (9 bar working pressure), complete with Sigma Control 2 and a variable speed motor which constantly matches its output to cope with varying energy demands.

The compressor was installed in December last year and has since functioned without fault, as David Golightly explains: "Thorite recommended the HPC compressor based on an assessment of our requirements and I have to say it is a brilliant machine. Downtime because of insufficient compressed air is now a thing of the past and in addition we are enjoying energy savings of around 25%, which equates to cost savings of over £2,000.00 per year. Thorite also now provides ongoing service for the compressor installation, which is resulting in even more savings, so I couldn't be happier with the whole situation."
