Probiotics and OIT suggested as treatment for peanut allergy – Happy Kombucha comments

Happy Kombucha, an online seller of probiotic foods and health products in the UK, have commented on research which has discovered that a combination of OI and probiotics can effectively treat peanut allergies.

The discovery was made after a study, conducted by Australian researchers and published in Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, looked at 60 children, aged 1 to 10, who had peanut allergies. Half of the group drank five-gram of freeze-dried probiotic powder combined with milk or water each day. Also added to the drink was peanut protein, which was gradually increased over the course of the 18 month study. The other half of the group were given a placebo therapy instead.

The results show that a staggering 80% of the group who were given probiotics and OIT will be able to safely consume peanuts at some point in the future.

Lead author and paediatric allergist at Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, said: “The treatment involves both the probiotic together with the allergen so taking the probiotic alone won’t have an effect. We know this because children who had other food allergies in addition to their peanut allergy did not have a change in their other allergy responses.

“I noted that OIT was not very effective at inducing tolerance, although it did have immune effects towards intolerance. So I thought if we add an immune modifying adjuvant, such as a probiotic together with the OIT, we might be able to create the right immune milieu to induce oral tolerance.

The news will be welcomed by those with peanut allergies. It’s only been warmly received amongst a number of people with an interest in probiotics, including Happy Kombucha.
