2014 Revival ofOn the TownComes to Broadway
New York, New York−The 2014 revival of the 1944 Broadway hitOn the Townis returning to the Great White Way this fall. This new musical full of song, dance, and spectacle tells the story of three sailors on a whirlwind 24-hour shore leave in New York City. Directed by Tony Award winner John Rando, the show opens for previews September 20th, 2014 with an October 16th, 2014 opening night at Broadway's Lyric Theatre.
In this classic American musical comedy, main characters Gabey, Chip, and Ozzie, make the most of their short time in New York City by visiting all of the Big Apple's top attractions. The trio do more than just explore, they also take a chance at love, allowing their hearts to be stolen by three dream girls- Ivy, Hildy, and Claire. This funny, romantic classic provides wonderful examples of how much there is to do, see, and experience in the city that never sleeps in the show that never gets old.
On the Townis jam-packed with classic numbers including: "New York, New York," "I Can Cook Too," "Lonely Town" and "Some Other Time," whose original orchestrations will be performed by 28 musicians in what will be the largest orchestra on Broadway, led by musical director James Moore. Before the original 1944 Broadway production, it was a successful ballet entitled "Fancy Free" and was performed at the old Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. The show went on to become a film starring international sensations, Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra, and hold's classic appeal for older generations. Young audiences will also be engaged, as this revival drops the characters into a larger-than-life storybook of retro New York City, and is perfect for families with children eight and up.
Unique to this Broadway show, the winner of theprime-time reality competition "So You Think You Can Dance" (SYTYCD) season 11 (2014) will be offered the opportunity to join the cast ofOn the Townin spring 2015. Internationally, SYTYCD continues to enjoy success with its Australian, German, and British versions, among others. Choreographer Joshua Bergasse is also known globally for his role as choreographer of NBC's television show,SMASH, which depicted life in the business of musical theater.
