Marcos
Clowes FCILT, Director of Logistics Leadership, has warned that the UK is
dangerously unprepared for the future of logistics — with outdated
infrastructure, disconnected policies, and a national strategy that continues
to overlook the systems behind the country's supply chains.
Speaking
ahead of his admission as a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Carmen — one
of the most historic honours in UK transport — Clowes says the moment is not
only a personal milestone, but a call to action.
“I’m deeply
honoured to be admitted as a Freeman of the Carmen,” he said.
“It recognises a lifetime of work in logistics, but more importantly, it
reinforces my commitment to give back — to mentor future leaders, advise
decision-makers, and advocate for meaningful change.”
Clowes has
spent nearly four decades transforming complex supply chain operations for
companies such as Tesco, Oriflame and THG. Now, through his platform Logistics
Leadership, he advises boards, executives, and investors on strategy,
resilience, and modernisation.
“In every
sector I work with, leaders are wrestling with the same issue: how do we
modernise logistics in a system that isn’t built for it?”
He points
to electric vehicle initiatives, last-mile pressures, labour shortages, and
underfunded infrastructure as symptoms of a deeper issue — a lack of national
cohesion.
“Until we
have a joined-up logistics strategy that involves government, industry, and
innovators at the same table, we’ll keep falling behind.
Transport can’t be fixed in isolation — it must be understood as a system, and
treated as one.”
Clowes says
that beyond electric trucks and decarbonisation targets, it’s the alignment of
policy, people, and planning that will define the UK's logistics future.
“This is
not a technology challenge — it’s a leadership one.
And I intend to keep lending my voice and experience to ensure logistics is no
longer left out of the national conversation.”
