Reopened Huddersfield garden centre donates plants to local school

The team at a Huddersfield garden centre celebrated the reopening of its site by donating plants to a local primary school.

Yorkshire Garden Centres acquired the former Dobbies Garden Centre Pennine at Shelley and has renamed it Pennine Garden Centre in line with its growing family of centres at Tong, Tingley, Otley, Bingley, York and Scarborough.

The team at Pennine Garden Centre near Shelley were approached byMrs Pogson, Forest School Leader, who looks after the garden area and beekeeping clubat neighbouringHighburton CE First Academy.

She said: "We were delighted to learn that Pennine had new owners and was reopening. We approached them as we wanted tocreate raised beds, plants ‘seeds to feed' to sell in our school shop, and wildflowers for around school. We are very grateful for their generous donation and look forward to sharing pictures of what we've grown with the team at Pennine Garden Centre."

Lisa Hessell, centre manager at Pennine Garden Centre said: "We are a family-friendly, community-focussed garden centre, and we're delighted to support children's learning and to help foster a love of gardening at an early age.

"We donated tools, gloves, bedding plants, vegetable and flower seeds. It was lovely to see the children choosing bedding plants to match the colours of the school's rainbow logo that represent the school values of Trust, Unique, Independent, Grateful, Honest, Helpful and Kind. They plan to reproduce the logo using bedding plants at the front of the school."

Pennine Garden Centre was formerly owned by the Armitage family and occupies a four acre site near the village of Shelley.

Highburton C.E First Academy's vision is to cultivate a vibrant learning community where every child is valued and empowered to flourish. Its motto is ‘Every person is a rainbow waiting to shine.'
