Bathroom waterproofing materials: Schlüter-Systems discusses three reasons to use sheet membranes

When it comes to waterproofing a bathroom there are two main methods for existing backgrounds: liquid-applied systems or sheet membranes. Here Schlüter-Systems breaks down key differences between them and outlines three reasons for using a sheet membrane.

Bathrooms are exposed to a significant level of moisture, with a power shower producing 15 litres per minute, a toilet using four to six litres every time it's flushed and a running tap producing nine litres per minute, according toWaterwise. The impact of water damage from an incorrectly waterproofed shower area could be devastating, potentially costing the installer or the homeowner lots of time and money putting it right. Bathroom waterproofing is the key to preventing both damp and mould, along with reducing the risk of water leakages.

There are two main methods of waterproofing existing backgrounds such as plasterboard, moisture-resistant boards (cement boards), magnesium oxide boards and glass fibre reinforced boards. These two methods are liquid-applied and sheet membranes. Here we cover what each is and outline three main reasons why using a sheet material is the ideal solution for waterproofing a shower area.

Overview of methods

A sheet membrane such asSchlüter-KERDI-200has been developed as a bonded waterproofing assembly for use with ceramic tile and natural stone coverings and can be used in conjunction with other products to create the ultimate waterproofing solution. Most sheet membrane systems are usually secured to the substrate using an adhesive.

Meanwhile, a liquid-applied waterproofing system is applied using a brush or roller, much like paint. Though this method offers a quick solution that requires no prior experience to use, there are a few drawbacks to using this.

Three reasons to use a sheet membrane

Time saved

Many paint-on systems require two coats to be applied before tiling can start. The drying time between these two coats, plus additional drying time to allow the waterproofing to cure before tiling, could cost precious installation time.  If using a sheet membrane, such as KERDI-200, it is not essential to wait for the adhesive to dry prior to tiling. The tile covering can be installed as soon as the entire waterproofing assembly is tightly sealed at all overlaps, corners and joints, with no waiting required.

Schlüter also offers wider 2m rolls of KERDI-200, making installation even quicker and more efficient whilst reducing the risks associated with waterproofing because a wider roll equates to fewer joins, potential points for leakage and less waterproof seaming required. This also means savings in material and time costs and a more efficient process overall.

Crack bridging

Cracks can often appear in a substrate over time often due to movement or temperature change. A sheet membrane offers crack bridging properties, whereas liquid-applied systems usually have limited crack-bridging functionality, which can lead to water ingress.

Uniformity

Using a sheet membrane offers complete uniformity. Available as a single consistent layer, the sheet membrane is an even thickness so that all areas of the substrate are covered equally. By the nature of using a brush or roller it is difficult to achieve the same level of consistency.

As with any project, it's important to ensure the product used is suitable for the application. Other factors such as the speed of installation, materials' cost and properties of the material used are important to consider and could impact on which type of system to use.

Schlüter-KERDI is also available as a complete kit,Schlüter-KERDI-200, for shower areas and includes the KERDI-200 waterproofing membrane, corresponding sealing bandKERDI-KEBA, pipe collars and sealing adhesive,KERDI-COLL-L, with kit sizes available for common room sizes.
