Bringing warmth, and a 50% drop in heating bills, to a historic home in Clovelly, Devon

Pictured is Lisa Pritchard at her home in Clovelly where Mitchell & Dickinson made her house a home again

The historic village of Clovelly is one of the most beautiful landmarks Devon has to offer. With views across the Atlantic, many of the homes and buildings are Grade 1* and 2* listed, designations which protect the heritage of the area. They do, however, mean that home improvements such as double glazing are not permitted.

Lisa Pritchard loved living in her cottage in Clovelly but the gales which blew in over the Atlantic Sea meant that her Rayburn was operating on full blast for most of the winter months; which was largely ineffective and came at a considerable cost. For many years, Lisa tried to ignore her losing battle with the draughts which seemed to be coming from in all angles of the house.

Insulation specialist,Mitchell & Dickinson, came to the rescue with a bespoke solution to combat these pesky draughts! Firstly, the company installed the uniqueCosyGlazingsecondary glazing system; while the loft and sloping ceilings were insulated with sheep's wool.

Since the installation, Lisa has reported that her fuel bills have dropped by 50% from £2,400 per year to £1,200. She says, ‘I noticed the change right away. I'm buying half the coal I used to, so it is saving me 50% on my fuel bills and, when that is £30-40 a week, it soon mounts up. Last year, for the first time, we didn't light the Rayburn from May to September at all and did so only a few times in March and April. I used to put an electric heater in the children's bedroom for three hours every evening and, last winter, I only used it once. People would be crazy not to have it done.'

Mitchell & Dickinson has created a short film on the refurbishment of Clovelly which can be viewedhereand explains the project in more detail.  It expresses the views from the tenants on their experience firsthand.
