Pickering farmer shortlisted in regional business excellence awards 

A Pickering farmer and business owner has reached the final of a regional business excellence award for his charitable endeavours.

Karl Avison from the Cedarbarn Farm Shop and Café has been shortlisted in The Rob Burrow Outstanding Contribution to Charity Award at theYorkshire PostExcellence in Business Awardsthat celebrate Yorkshire's best in business.

Mr Avison was nominated for the award after he became the first person in history to compete in the Macmillan Ride of Their Lives for a second time and raised over £40,000 for the charity following his own battle with cancer.

"The Rob Burrow award celebrates a Yorkshire company or individual which has done the most to help a good charitable cause in the past 12 months and I'm overwhelmed to have earned a place in the final alongside five other worthy winners. Thanks to everyone who supported our fundraising events and helped us to reach this amazing total," said Mr Avison.

Mr Avison faces competition from Yorkshire Garden Centres, Gripple Ltd, Regal Food Group, RJC Plant Services and Rob Northfield. He will learn whether he has been successful at an awards ceremony at Headingley Stadium on 21st November. Mr Burrow's family will be in attendance on the evening and will present the trophy to the winner.

Mr Avison was one of a team of 12 amateur jockeys who raised £223, 947 towards a new cancer centre at York Hospital.
