Saluting Our Sisters for Black History Month
A New Poetry Collection Celebrating the Strength and Resilience of Black Women
[United Kingdom, 1stOctober 2024] Black History UK CIC is thrilled to announce the release of Saluting Our Sisters, a powerful new poetry anthology that celebrates the spirit, strength, and resilience of Black women, the forgotten voices of history. To celebrate October's Black History Month, this inspiring collection brings together voices from across the UK to honour the rich legacy and enduring impact of Black women in our communities and beyond.
Saluting Our Sisters features a diverse array of original poems that reflect on the historical and contemporary experiences of Black women, highlighting their roles as trailblazers, caregivers, leaders, and nurturers. Through powerful verses, the anthology explores themes of identity, empowerment, love, and struggle, offering readers a deep and emotional journey into the lives and stories of Black women.
This collection is not just a book but a movement - a call to recognise and uplift the contributions of Black women who have shaped our world, including Mary Seacole, Rosa Parks, and Michelle Obama. Each poem is a testament to the unique and collective experiences of Black women - some known, some unknown - offering both solace and inspiration to readers of all backgrounds.
Organised by its Editor-in-Chief, Cherron Inko-Tariah MBE, BHM Magazine UK hosted a national BHM poetry competition as a tribute to the invaluable contributions of Black women and bringing to the forefront the emerging poetic talents from young people and the African and Caribbean communities.
Cherron said, "Being involved in this poetry competition was an absolute delight. The diversity and passion in the submissions were outstanding."
Engaging over 3,000 poets across the nation, the competition highlighted the indispensable role of poetry in fostering education and cultural expression.
Saluting Our Sisters includes poems from the winners, finalists and highly commended. These poems resonate with authenticity, passion, and a deep sense of purpose. Ages 6 to over 60 years old, these poets offer a rich tapestry of perspectives, celebrating the diversity of Black womanhood and its profound impact on culture, society, and history.
Former Children's Laureate Joseph Coelho, who was one of the competition's judges, said, "This is a poetry collection to be savoured. It is an invitation to think about, pay tribute, honour and learn about the lives of black women. So often the many accomplishments of black women have gone horrifically unsung."
