A grant of almost £4,000 from Sport England will help older people improve their health and wellbeing.

The grant has meant that people working and volunteering in some of the 57 retirement living communities managed by Care Plus can be specially trained to deliver seated exercises suitable for those with limited mobility or difficulties walking and balancing.

The trained staff and volunteers will offer these valuable sessions in retirement living communities in Staffordshire and Shropshire.

With the support of Sport England, Care Plus is also obtaining resistance bands and other equipment used in the adapted workouts as well as new boccia sets for the growing number of its residents taking part in the accessible ball sport.

"We are delighted to have received this fantastic support from Sport England," said Sue Atkins, head of specialist supported housing in Care Plus. "Seated exercise brings huge benefits for people who might not otherwise be able to take part in fitness activities. It can increase flexibility and strength, develop better coordination, reduce the risk of falls and just as importantly, boost confidence and self-esteem.

"These exercise sessions and our new boccia sets will also help to relieve social isolation, by bringing people together in a fun way."
