Studio Interior, oil on canvas| Charles MacCarthy

This spring, The Sanctuary Studio & Gallery presentsStill Moments, an exhibition of paintings that explore the simple beauty of interior spaces and everyday objects.

Charles MacCarthy's exquisitely rendered paintings bring the tranquillity and light of Flemish art to 21stcentury interiors. In a palette of muted ochres, greys and slate blues he captures the quiet of the empty room, the unoccupied studio, and the stillness of chairs, drawers and ceramic objects in slowly shifting light, defining ‘absence' as a perfect and utterly peaceful state. Charles comes from a family of painters and sculptors on his French born mother's side, and writers and artists on his father's side, many of them associated with the Bloomsbury Group. He studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, graduating in 1972, and held his first solo exhibition at The Borlase Gallery, Blewbury in 1978. He exhibits widely in the UK and France.

Still Life with Yellow Table, oil on wood panel | Rose Arbuthnott

Rising young artist Rose Arbuthnott is a sculptor and painter of extraordinary, unrestrained still life works. Leading with her brush and taking a fearless approach to colour, she creates pure and psychologically rich oil-on-wood-panel works in which objects take on an essential character and context in relation to the space in which they sit. Rose was born in Cheltenham and studied Art and Art History at Edinburgh University before receiving a scholarship to attend The Prince's Drawing School in London, and she is currently studying for a Masters degree in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art. She has been long listed for the John Moores Painting Prize and recently exhibited at the Royal Academy summer exhibition.

Painter Suzanne Davies makes still life works inspired by everyday objects that accompany the pleasures of culinary domesticity, which she infuses with the colour and cool northern light of Cornwall, where she lives and works. Her collections begin with small sketches of things, or memories of things, from her kitchen or local produce markets. Arranging her compositions in a way that reflects her background in film and editorial photography, she celebrates those little scenes of a home-life well lived.
