Emproof Nyx awarded ISO 26262 certification for functional safety in automotive

 Press Release: 29 June 2023

Emproof Nyx awarded ISO 26262 certification for functional safety in automotive components.

Emproof, a leading embedded systems security company, today announced that it has been awarded the ISO 26262 (ASIL B) certification for functional safety in automotive components. The certification was awarded by TÜV NORD CERT GmbH, a globally renowned third-party testing, inspection and certification company and is believed to be a first for a binary transformation technology and for security transformation such as exploit mitigation and IP protection.

As the adoption of electronic components in automobiles continues to increase and the development of future applications is accelerated across industries, the importance of automotive safety standards for semiconductor components as well as their level of sophistication has also risen. The accreditation of Emproof’s solution, Emproof Nyx, satisfies the industry’s rigid safety standards throughout the embedded device's lifecycle.

“We’re proud to have received this certification which recognises that we are working to the highest safety standards both technically and through our processes,” said Marc Fyrbiak, Emproof Co-founder and Chief Product Officer.

“Within a few years, cars, lorries and buses will become more sophisticated – to a degree that would once have been unimaginable. Even before the advent of self-driving cars, which will involve massive use of embedded systems, cars will be able to sense, plan, communicate and, of course, drive, with minimal human involvement. Currently, there is little thought given to embedded systems security planning. But at Emproof we want to change this, and this certification gives us the mandate to drive awareness and educate to help ensure intelligent vehicles software is protected from hacking and bugs.”

The ISO 26262 for automotive functional safety was established as a global standard by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2011 to minimise risks from electric or electronic system malfunction in vehicles. Recognising the growing requirements for semiconductors in emerging automotive technologies such as advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving, guidelines specific to such products were added to the revised standard in 2018.

“Virtually every embedded device that runs software can benefit from the advanced security protection offered by Emproof Nyx – including protection against reverse engineering and exploitation attacks. This is especially the case in applications that are interconnected or run critical functional safety, like those used in cars,” added Tim Blazytko, Emproof Co-founder and Chief Scientist.
