This summer, The Sanctuary Studio & Gallery presents a show by four women painters whose work is inspired by the landscape. Sharon Harvey's paintings are inspired by the natural world, from botanical forms to the rivers, forests, wide horizons and rugged coastline of the England's uniquely beautiful landscape. Having recently moved from Hampshire to the village of Newnham on Severn, her new collections explore the rolling hills and open skies of rural Gloucestershire, expressing the smooth topography, changing colours and rich textures of a county on the river estuary, reflected in endlessly shifting clouds. Sharon graduated in 2016 with a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art, and was shortlisted for the National Graduate Award. Her work is held in private collections in the UK and internationally.

Sylvia Wadsley is a contemporary landscape painter living and working near Stroud. Her landscape painting is a reflection of her emotional relationship with nature, from the beauty she sees in the Gloucestershire landscape and the serenity she finds spending time in nature, to her concerns about the impact of the climate crisis. Working in her studio from a visual diary of plein air sketches, small gouache paintings and altered photography, she distils moments in place and time into works that bridge the gap between the figurative and the abstract. Sylvia graduated with a First Class Degree in Fine Art in 2004, and in 2021 she was longlisted for the Jackson's Painting Prize.

Kirsten Elswood lives and works in West Cornwall. Her paintings are inspired by the rugged coast and moorland of the Penwith Peninsula, and by the rural landscapes of her childhood in Devon. Through considered mark-making, she makes works that respond the immediate experience and also memory of ‘place', aiming to evoke "the wind on your cheek, the smell of the mud, moss and grass, the sound of the breeze carrying the birdsong, the rumble of thunder".  Kirsten studied Fine Art at Exeter College of Art, and is currently studying at Newlyn School of Art.

Landscape painter Bron Jones lives and works in the beautiful setting of Carmarthenshire, South Wales. Her work aims to capture what she calls ‘fleeting, but magical' moments in nature, inspired by her daily walks in the countryside. Typically working on several paintings at once, she builds layers of texture through the application of vibrant acrylic pigments and other materials, glazing, scratching and sanding back surfaces to expose subtleties of texture and colour.
