Tempus - a leap in time from Ben Rousseau to be unveiled at Clerkenwell 2023

Internationally renowned British designer Ben Rousseau is set to unveil a stunning new range of illuminated timepieces at Clerkenwell Design Week - May 23rd-25th.

The eye-catching"Tempus"has been conceived and created by Rousseau as both a piece of statement art and a functional piece of futuristic furniture and will be on display at the Light Pavilion on stand P30.

Rousseau, who has recently returned to the UK after working on a series of major properties in the US explains the idea behind the Tempus;

‘The first thing to note here is that there's no hands. Or numbers. At least not in the traditional sense.

‘My goal was to harness the calming qualities of digital lighting controls so that the timepiece can both relax, refresh and even mesmerise whoever is observing it.

‘The way we view time tends to be from a position of lack, of haste, of challenge. I want to change the way we experience time by taking influence and attention to detail from luxury watchmaking and sports car instrumentation but doing so on a larger scale.'

Tempus is the culmination of over 22 years experience working with lighting technology, precision engineering and luxury materials and in true Rousseau style, Tempus brings a sense of theatre to the simple act of telling the time.

Inspired by Rousseau's love of science fiction film sets and automotive design, a futuristic clock face operates with addressable digital LEDs that illuminate three different segments: seconds, minutes and hours, in sequence, to represent a 12-hour time path.

Rousseau then uses computer controlled laser cutting machines and digital lighting technology to help Tempus bring the art of telling the time firmly into the 21st century.

Rousseau concludes;

‘The Tempus range is crafted with sustainable, locally sourced, cutting-edge materials, and the precision machines that I believe define my work. This is about balancing form and function with a futuristic approach.

‘So Tempus is combining the technology and beauty of digitally controlled lighting to complement and enhance modern environments whilst hopefully encouraging us to appreciate time in a new light.'

Tempus is currently available in classic circular form at 600 mm diameter size and is available either wall-mounted, table mounted or floor-standing on custom designed stands.

Price starts at £7,950 plus VAT for the Classic Edition available as 1 or 60 pieces.

The 1st Collector's Edition starts at £9,950 plus VAT for the Positano, limited to just 12 pieces.

Tempus is a showcase for the ethos and passion of artist and designer, Ben Rousseau, who set up his studio in 2001 producing bespoke lighting creations for a range of clients including private collectors, brands and hoteliers.

Ben wanted to design a timepiece that embodied his love of uniform repeating geometries and married a futuristic aesthetic with the functionality required for everyday life. His ambition is to transform the way society thinks about time in order to appreciate the importance and joy of living in the moment.

Avoiding traditional numbers or hands, Tempus instead uses an innovative, building pattern of light to present the time, with 132 channels of illuminating segments over three hypnotic, uniform arrangements.

Tempus is crafted with sustainable, locally sourced, cutting-edge materials, and the precision machines that define Ben's work. As well as combining the technology and beauty of digitally controlled lighting to complement and enhance modern environments, Tempus encourages us to appreciate time in a new light.
