Industrial battery specialist Hoppecke is continuing to build its reputation in the marine sector, having supplied energy systems for 20 boats during the past 18 months.

The latest contract was Hoppecke's first with Piper Boats, which specialises in bespoke Dutch-style barges. The boatbuilder has launched a new model river cruiser, purpose-designed for the UK market, and wanted anenergy system that would allow it to cruise in virtual silence.

Hoppecke's general manager, Stuart Browne, said: "We're delighted to complete our first project with Piper Boats, which posed an interesting challenge.

"A Dutch-style barge is wider and shorter than the narrowboats we're familiar with and since the layout is therefore quite different, we created a bespoke energy system that fits into a special container housed in the mid-deck area."

Hoppecke supplied a custom-built battery bank whichintegrates with the boat's 48v DC hybrid system. This system combines with a Nanni engine, which delivers extra range and power during river flood conditions.

The vessel is operated as a corporate hire boat on the River Thames. Since propulsion noise levels are an important consideration in this environment, the fact that the energy bank and diesel engine offer up to three hours of silent river cruising is a major benefit.

Simon Piper, managing director of Piper Boats, said: "We know of Hoppecke and its excellent reputation in the motive power sector so opted to partner with them because we needed a reliable energy source that would power a parallel hybrid drive.

"Hoppecke batteries were the best choice for a safe and trouble-free solution, and everyone is delighted with the end result."

With every project Hoppecke is becoming better known in the sector and hasfurther marineenergy systemscurrently on order.
