“ARE YOU THERE, GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET” - release date 19 May 2023

Judy Blume’s beloved novel, “ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET,” is coming to the big screen on 19 May 2023

For over fifty years, Judy Blume’s classic and ground-breaking novel “ARE YOU THERE, GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET” has impacted generations with its timeless coming-of-age story, insightful humour, and candid exploration of life’s biggest questions.

Upon publication, “ARE YOU THERE, GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET” was an immediate success and was placed on the New York Times’ list of outstanding books of the year and remains highly regarded for its frank portrayal of childhood. It has never been out of print since its initial publication and is considered a children's classic.  In 2010, Time Magazine put it on a list of the 100 best novels published since 1923 and in 2012 it made Scholastic Parent & Child Magazine's list of 100 Greatest Books for Kids.

In Lionsgate’s big-screen adaptation, 11-year-old Margaret (Abby Ryder Fortson) is uprooted from her life in New York City for the suburbs of New Jersey, going through the messy and tumultuous throes of puberty with new friends in a new school. Anxious to fit in with her new friends, Nancy, Gretchen, and Janie, she joins their secret club to talk about private subjects like boys, bras, and getting their first periods, Margaret is happy to belong.

Margaret is funny and real, and her thoughts and feelings are oh-so-relatable—you’ll feel like she’s talking right to you, sharing her secrets with a friend. She relies on her mother, Barbara (Rachel McAdams), who is also struggling to adjust to life outside the big city, and her adoring grandmother, Sylvia (Kathy Bates), who isn’t happy they moved away and likes to remind them every chance she gets.

A child of an interfaith marriage — between a Jewish father and a Christian mother — Margaret struggles with her relationship to religion living in a secular household. Being raised without an affiliation to either faith and not practicing an organised religion, Margaret has her own very special relationship with God. She can talk to God about everything—family, friends, even her secret crush.

“ARE YOU THERE, GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET” also stars Benny Safdie (Licorice Pizza, Good Time) and is written for the screen and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (The Edge of Seventeen), based on the book by Judy Blume, and produced by Gracie Films’ Academy Award® winner James L. Brooks (Best Picture, 1983 – Terms of Endearment), alongside Julie Ansell, Richard Sakai, Kelly Fremon Craig, Judy Blume, Amy Lorraine Brooks, Aldric La’auli Porter, and executive produced by Jonathan McCoy. Lionsgate presents, a Gracie Films production.
