Emma Jeffryes | The Sea

1stto 28thApril 2023

Emma Jeffryes | Boat Brights

This new collection by painter Emma Jeffryes is inspired by her love of living by the sea. Emma moved to West Cornwall 26 years ago to a house that looks out over the ocean from St. Ives Bay and across the Hayle Estuary to Godrevy and beyond. Since that time, she has immersed her life and work in celebrating the sea through her swimming, surfing and painting, even taking part in the St Ives Biathlon several times, once becoming the first local woman home. She describes the sea as "fundamental in my life, a continual source of inspiration" and fans of her vibrant paintings will know that her work has always revolved around the ocean and the lively Cornish villages beside it.

This exhibition, she says,"will encompass all that the sea means to me". Many works in the collection are inspired by Mousehole's 2022 Seasalts and Sails festival, a celebration of beautiful old sailing vessels, where Emma spent the weekend sketching, photographing and ‘plein air' painting. The resulting works showcase her ongoing experimentation with expressive marks and mixed media, and include views of St Ives, of swimmers, fishing boats, rowers and sailing yachts, against the backdrop of Cornwall's pure white sand and dazzling blue waters.
