L.B. Foster Selected to Transport for Wales Station Modification Framework

L.B. Foster, a global solutions provider of products and services for the rail and infrastructure markets, has been successfully appointed by Transport for Wales (TfW) Rail Limited to its four-year £194m Station Modification Infrastructure Enhancements Framework.

TfW is carrying out the most comprehensive upgrade to rail infrastructure in Wales for a generation. It will provide a better customer experience with newer trains, faster and more frequent services, more capacity and revitalised stations.

The Station Modification Infrastructure Enhancements Framework (SMIEF) is divided into seven lots. L.B. Foster was successfully selected for Lot 4 - Pan Wales Station Information and Security Systems (SISS) Projects. SMIEF covers the provision of non-complex works at stations, remedial works to existing structures, major and complex works to stations and Infrastructure Owner works, including structures, fencing, civil works and buildings and property, across the Wales and Borders rail infrastructure.

Emma Boura, Head of Technology Services, L.B. Foster Europe, says: "We're excited to be joining Transport for Wales on its mission to transform transport in Wales and make it fit for the future, inspiring a nation to change the way it travels and combating the climate emergency we all face.

"This is L.B. Foster's first framework for Transport for Wales and reflects our growing reputation for excellence acquired on prestigious infrastructure projects, such as London's Crossrail Project. The framework is all about delivering real, practical benefits for people who use railway stations on a day-to-day basis across Wales and its borders.

"Drawing on our long experience of installing Station Information and Security Systems, we will enable station managers to operate a station safely and securely, for the railway police to investigate incidents, to inform passengers of train departures, to help train operators maintain the timetable - and much more."

The SMIEF four-year framework includes a two-year extension option.

Transport for Wales (TfW) was set up by the Welsh Government in 2016 to oversee public transport in Wales.

NOTES TO EDITORS

What is GRIP?

Network Rail developed the GRIP (Governance for Railway Investment Projects) process to manage and control investment projects - ones that enhance or renew the national rail network as opposed to those involved with routine maintenance of the railway. It was developed in order to minimise and mitigate the risks associated with delivering such projects.

GRIP divides a project into eight distinct stages. The overall approach is product, rather than process, driven and, within each stage, an agreed set of products is delivered.

1. Output definition.
2. Feasibility.
3. Option selection.
4. Single option development.
5. Detailed design.
6. Construction test and commission.
7. Scheme hand back.
8. Project close out.
