Reindeer suffering this Christmas

Dear Letters Editor,

The bright lights, festive music andlarge crowds at a Christmas eventare exciting forfamilies. However, for the reindeer displayed in a pen or used to pull Santa’s sleigh, the same event can be hugely stressful and can have severe health and welfare impacts.

Reindeer are sensitive herd animals who are adapted to live in a cold climate, roaming great distances each day, foraging for lichen, herbsand other plants. They do not cope well with the stress of captivity or being transported around the country to appear atfestive events

Unfortunately, many local authorities and other event organisers, use live animalsin events when there are kinder ways to entertain crowds. Animal Aid have contacted every council in the UK to urge them to find animal-free alternatives.

Over 140 local authoritieshave agreed not to use live animals in their festive events in 2022, with many also refusing to grant permission for such events on council owned land. A growing number of progressive councils also have a ‘animal free’ events policy.

We urge readers to boycott any festive events involving live animals and to contact Animal Aid to order an ‘Antler Pack’ for more information: rachel@animalaid.org.uk

Thank you.
